COLONIAL PENSIONS

CURRENCY.

The B.H. dollar is linked with the U.S. dollar.

Pensions are awarded in dollars (never in sterling)

and if paid in this country are converted at the

rate of exchange prevailing at the date of payment.

(The U.S. dollar rate for some considerable time

has been £1 = 4.03 dollars)

Pensions are awarded in Fiji currency

(£111 Figi

=

£100 sterling) and when paid in

this country are converted at the rate prevailing

at date of payment.

Expressed either in rupees or sterling. The

Rupee is fixed at 1/6.

Where the local currency is the dollar, the rate of exchange is stabilised at 4.80 to £1. (e.g. Trinidad).

Pensions are normally awarded and paid in sterling

Pensions are normally awarded locally in dollars, but it has been the practice to notify the pensioner in terms of sterling, and the dollar has always been taken as stabilised at 2/4.

In the Island the Govt. pay at the rate of £1 = 15 rupees (Rs. 1 = 1/4)

Pensions are normally paid in the U.K at Rs. 1 = 1/6. For the purpose of Ceylon Income tax on pensions, if deducted locally the 1/4 rate is used. If, however, Income tax is remitted from the U.K., the pensioner has to pay 1/6 for every rupee of tax due.
